During my career, I have been honored to work with some of the BSA's best membership growth experts, both volunteers and professionals. In my quest to keep learning from the best practices of these experts and councils, I have discovered key essentials for a successful recruiting campaign, especially for the fall.
Regardless of a council's size, it's essential to allocate the necessary money to a school night or a roundup. For the successful Hooked on Scouting, we raised $60,000 in sponsor dollars to provide free fishing poles and free fishing derbies for all new Scouts in 2014 and 2015.
Another essential is an effective marketing committee with the creativity and knowledge of media to get the Scouting story to families.
Also essential is a quality Roundup or Join Scouting Night coordinator. That person oversees the entire campaign, coordinating the work of the marketing committee and everyone responsible for Joining Night activities.
Having a great CAMPAIGN TOOLBOX, full of awesome materials for units to use. It is also important to utilize an exciting theme to help build excitement for the youth and their families.
RESULTS:
Cub Scout membership grew each year in 2014 and 2015 in the Council.
New Scouts recruited grew 3% or greater each year.
